A Cultural Collaboration on the Global Stage
For Miss Global 2022, JOANNALSM partnered with Singapore representative Mandy Tang to design a national costume that beautifully encapsulated Singapore’s multicultural identity and Mandy’s personal journey. The result was a custom gown rich in symbolism, craftsmanship, and heritage—hand-dyed, beaded, and deeply meaningful.

About Mandy Tang
Mandy Tang is a passionate young entrepreneur with a deep love for creativity, branding, marketing, and fashion. For her, creation is a purposeful journey—one that begins with discovering meaning and ends in authentic expression. Representing Singapore at Miss Global 2022, Mandy sought to embody both personal and cultural identity through fashion.
About the Dress
In collaboration with JOANNALSM, Mandy’s national costume was designed to be more than just a gown—it was a visual narrative. Staying true to the brand’s storytelling approach, the piece weaves together elements of Singapore’s multicultural heritage and Mandy’s own identity.
The gown was hand-dyed in Singapore’s iconic red and white on vegetable-based gajji silk, chosen for its rich texture and eco-conscious nature. The silhouette incorporates a traditional Chinese mandarin collar, a nod to Mandy’s roots, while patterns inspired by India’s Rangoli art and Peranakan tiles reflect the harmonious blend of cultures in Singapore. Architectural references from Black and White colonial homes are subtly integrated into the form, and the piece is finished with hand-beaded embellishments representing the Singapore skyline.

The creation process involved extensive ideation, research, and innovation—finding creative ways to encapsulate both Mandy’s essence and Singapore’s spirit.
From digital print tests and hand-dye experiments to intricate beadwork, every step of the gown’s development was a labor of love, culminating in a piece that proudly represented Singapore on the global stage.
