Yuan 源

A collaborative exhibition with fine artist Benedict Yu

源 (Yuan)—meaning “origin” in Chinese—is a conceptual fashion-art collection that explores identity through a dual lens of self and society. Developed in collaboration with fine artist Benedict Yu, this body of work fuses garment design and artistic storytelling to question who we are beneath the layers shaped by routine and expectation.

Rooted in the theme of origin, the collection seeks to move beyond conventional ideas of fashion as mere utility or aesthetic. Instead, Yuan becomes a medium for introspection—an expressive dialogue between internal truth and external form..

We should always be comfortable in our skin — who we are, what we want to be, what we do, what we aspire our life to be. After all, nobody knows you best but yourself.”

There are two distinct design approaches in the collection:

1. The Outer Shell
Crafted by Benedict, these sculptural pieces represent the hardened exterior we build through societal structures—school, work, routines. While these systems are essential, they often distance us from our true selves. Coated with rice and sand, the surface of these outer shells metaphorically suggests erosion and eventual disintegration—revealing the self within.

2. The Inner Garment
Created by Joanna, the inner layer symbolizes the raw, authentic spirit of the individual. In contrast to the monochrome outer shells, these garments are expressed in bold, vivid colors—channeling emotion, spirit, and freedom. They reflect who we truly are beneath societal expectations.

Original artworks by Benedict are transformed into textiles, with Joanna developing custom prints that embody the collection’s emotional core. Comfort remains central: breathable, soft fabrics are used to ensure each piece not only speaks—but lives.
